opinions sought on 1988 Quattro 90

I'm looking at buying a 1988 Quattro 90 to replace my aginf GTI.

The prospective car has a few problems:  the biggest one being a leaky and
noisy rear diff.  Does anyone have an idea of what this would cost to
replace/repair?  The current owner thinks that it's the front seal and the
pinion bearing.

Another fault is that the car's "Engine Timing II" fuse keeps burning.  Does
anyone have any experience with such a problem?  The current owner has the
impression that this burny fuse results in hard starting when cold.......?
Credible?
