MOT blues (longish)

What was that about pride and falls? counting chickens? eggs in baskets?

Ah well, looks like I'll be after the smoked windows for next years quattro
club track day.

And I thought I looked after my car fairly well. In short it failed. The
seatbelt was a fail, 104 quid from the dealer, the one off the broken 80
quattro at Audi Only in Manchester looked like the original belt as well and
it had sat in the rain for goodness knows how long as well. Only took five
minutes to fit using the existing bolts?

High CO2, mixture adjusted by the garage. It seemed to make the car run a lot
better thought that could just be me imagining things. Does the mixture
adjustment on a 1984 vintage k-jetronic fi system adjust mixture throughout the
rev range or just at idle?

Low right front headlight, adjusted by me, the adjusters are very easy to turn, far better than the ones on my old sports lights were. It is the reflector
attitude that is changed rather than the entire lens unit (not news to you lot
I know but still neat).

No side repeaters working. This was interesting (!) the wings had the orange
lenses fitted but there was _no_ sign of any wiring for the indicators. My
mates brothers 80 quattro has no wing repeaters. I grabbed the loom for them
off an H registered 80 2.0e and spliced it to the wiring for the front
bumper indicators. Only trouble was I left some trailing wire on the off side
that managed to land on the exhaust manifold... three fuses out in total. Had meworried for a while when all of a sudden the battery/charge warning light lit upand all my warning lights refused to come on with the ignition prior to
starting. I hope the two low wattage bulbs won't overload the existing wiring?

Welding to the nearside chassis leg and inner wing from previous bodged jacking. The underside of the car is a bit of a mess from where folks have jacked in
every place bar the correct one. There is a bit of accident damage there too
from its dim and distant past.

Flexible brake lines front and rear, only the rears were a fail but one of the
fronts was on its way to being a failure too so the lot got replaced. Not even
a flare spanner could budge the rear lines, the garage had similar difficulty
so had to replace the rigid lines and unions as well. They also pointed out
the different (that's as in _odd_) rear calipers. All the time I have spent
under that car (admittedly not on the brakes) and never noticed that. Great.
It is a good excuse to put reconditioned units back there as have been fitted
to the front I guess but a little annoying to have to really. May explain why
on locking up it is always the right front tyre that locks first?

Enough moaning, it was a good excuse to fix the broken headlight washer
and rusty rear bulb holder/towbar wiring nightmare so now my lights get a good
soaking and my fog lights work again.

The good news is that I may be getting a lockup soon in Swnasea so don't have
to drive the 400 mile round trip to my parents place to work under cover on
hard ground.

Graham.

84 80 quattro.
