RE: Lighting Wattage 1990 V8Q.
I ordered some high wattage replacement bulbs for the headlights on my
'87 CGT from an ad in one of the car mags. They weren't terribly
expensive and they fit right into the existing 9004 sockets with no
problem. They proved to be an improvement and provided a much brighter
headlight, but only for a few days. Then they began to flicker, then
the highbeams wouldn't work, then one light wouldn't work all together,
then the other. I opened the hood and inspected the bulbs -- no problem
there, but when I got to the wires, they were a melted mess! Audi
doesn't make the wires to the headlights any heavier or more expensive
than absolutely necessary -- hence the reason they melted when attached
to a higher wattage bulb. I would be very careful about installing any
new type of bulb or headlight assembly which has a higher wattage than
factory lights. Unless of course you plan to upgrade the wires as well.
