misfiring, or not firing on all cylinders

I've been trying to sell my 85 audi coupe gt but I'm not having a very
easy time at it.  I had someone look at it tonight and test drive it,
he was a total know it all big time cock and bullshitter but thats not
important.  He did say something that was interesting though.  He said
that my engine wasnt firing on all cylinders and that does kinda make
sense.   So, how could I check that?  Is it as simple as taking the
spark plug off, grounding it to the engine and seeing if it sparks? 
Or how could I see if all 5 cylinders are sparking?  Maybe the firing
order are screwed up.
