Looking to do a rear wheel bearing myself, Detroit area listers???
I pulled the 86 5kq out from the mechanics shop late
yesterday evening, paying $31 for their estimate. I already
knew what was wrong, but, they insisted they had to verify
it by putting it up on the hoist before they could have given
be their estimate for $362.
My Q has only been to a mechanic twice, in the last five years
and 80k miles, both for wheel bearing replacements. The mechanic
who had done them was doing them for $100 or so labor, and $105 for
the part. Unfortunately, he closed up his small shop and moved in with
a larger import garage nearby. His previous phone number now forwards
there, and when I talked to him, he told me they were very similar in
charges.
So I now have the car in my driveway, and looking for advice. Does anyone
in the Detroit metro area have the Schley ( or does Zelinda have one too?)
tool to lend me, perhaps with some advice and GOTCHAs ???
I’m even considering buying the thing, do we get a list discount???
(The archives are currently slim pickings on this type of repair)
Please reply to me direct, ( cc list if you want, ) I am on the DIGEST,
and typically get list mail with a lag of two hours.
Thanks,
Alan Cordeiro
86 5kQ, 170k, keeps proving my wife right,
( i.e. why cant you just get a nice Honda Accord
or Toyota Camry like Xxxxx or Yyyyyyy, they never
have to waste whole weekends fixing their cars....)
