Between the tank and the fuel pump.  If you don't have one (a TSB
removed it for some cars) there'll be a tab bent up against the floor
pan.  Part number is 811 133 511 D.

I have the filter in line as does Phil.  I can't imagine running without 
it.  My car had sat with very little use for years and my new filter was 
black after 2 tanks.  This setup make sense for most inline fuelpump FI 
applications, one filter before the pump, to catch tank & gas Crud, the 
other after the pump to catch misses and pump sediment as it invariably 
self destructs its brushes and such over time.
