No, they're not exactly the same. Distilled water is, well, distilled:
boiled vapor is condensed and collected. This typically does a fairly
consistent job of removing *non-volatile* contaminents like metallic ions
and counterions--e.g., the mineral components. Certain volatiles (usually
organics) might not be removed, however.

Deionized water is water treated with a mixture of cationic and anionic
ion-exchange resins (little polymer beads), which--depending on how
diligently the job is done--removes many of the same ions. Probably won't
at all eliminate most of the organic contaminants that may be present.

The results of the two methods _can_ be similar, but probably never
identical. The pH values may be different, for example. Distilled water
will probably have a lower mineral content than deionized water. Cost may
be a lot different, too.

Also, I don't believe _either_ distilled or deionized water is needed for
automobile coolant unless your local tap water supply is of unusually poor
quality. In that case, I'd probably use _either_ deionized or distilled,
whichever was cheaper.
