90Q Tire/Wheel Fit?

Has anyone fit a tire larger than a 215/45/17 on this model car
(90Quattro) with a 7.5 inch wide wheel.  I am looking at 17 inch wheels
and I am being told the largest tire I can mount is a 215/45/17, Is this
true?  I currently have 225/50/16 on 7.5 inch wide wheels.  It seems
logical that a 225/40 or 45/17 would fit as long as it was on a 7.5 inch
wide 17 inch wheel.

Please help me?
