hit it, and then he barely misses it, or him being particularly carefully

This Q/A appears multiple times (which is another reason why it's so well
known), incl. very early on (it being a question about the whole
dinner), as well as just before the first wine (or maybe after a few 
glasses he drinks for the dead guests) - questioning the wine drinking
setup as he knows what will happen.

It never really seemed bizarre to me :)
I certainly watch it whenever I'm there at Christmastime.
