oil cooler question



I've got a 83 5kt that's an automatic. I just replaced the motor with a
rebuilt unit (thanks to Chris at Autobahn).  Anyway, the motor I pulled had a
connecting rod through the crankcase, (I bought it that way), which got me to
thinking about the oil cooler. I flushed the oil cooler and found it to be
contaminated with metal chips, which I later found out came from the main
bearings. I took it to a radiator shop thinking that they might be able to
clean it, but they said it was impossible. I do have a cooler from a 5kt w/
manual tranny, but it's obviously different. How important is it to use the
correct oil cooler and why? Will a manual trans. oil cooler not cool as well?
