J.D. Power used car survey, Audi #9
Just pulled this off the Atlanta newspaper website:
Detroit -- The Lexus division of Toyota Motor Corp. made the most dependable
five-year-old cars, according to an annual J.D. Power study.
The Cadillac division of General Motors Corp. finished second among vehicle
nameplates in the study released Wednesday.
It was the fourth year Lexus and Cadillac finished No. 1 and No. 2
respectively.
Luxury or premium brands held seven of the top 10 spots in the survey. The
exceptions were GM's Buick and Oldsmobile divisions, and Toyota.
"Primarily it's the luxury vehicles that do well," said Jon Power, manager of
dependability research and the son of the market research firm's founder.
Four of the five cars that scored best were from Lexus: the LS 400, SC 300/SC
400, the ES 300 and the GS 300. Also in the top five was the Cadillac DeVille.
The survey covers 54 vehicles from 35 makes and the rankings are based on
surveys of more than 28,000 original and second owners of 1993 model year
vehicles. Vehicle owners are asked to rate their vehicles in 89 problem
categories based on their last 12 months of experience.
J.D. Power said the most reliable mid-size cars were the Buick Regal Coupe,
Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera and Buick LeSabre. In pickups, the top three were the
Mazda pickup, Toyota pickup and Toyota T100, the study said.
When it came to sport utility vehicles, J.D. Power said the Isuzu Trooper,
Toyota Landcruiser and Toyota 4Runner were the most reliable 1993 models. As
for 1993 vans, J.D. Power cited the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon, Mazda MPV,
Oldsmobile Silhouette and Toyota Previa.
Power said the dependability of all vehicles has increased compared with
previous surveys. But he said Asian and then European automakers still had an
overall edge on the Big Three.
