CQ - speedo

I have an intermittent problem with the speedometer in my 1990 CQ not
working.  It can be at any time, starting out, 20 minutes later, etc. but
is most prevalent after start-up and starting to drive.  I am guessing this
is a loose connection.  I haven't looked in the archives (sorry), but was
particularly interested in whether it can be removed without removing the
steering wheel/airbag.  I don't know if I need to worry (any more than,
say, handling ammunition or responses to my wife), but the Bentley seems to
caution very much in regard to the unit.  Any BTDT would be appreciated.
