86 5K cosmetics: Black trim, rubber seals, lower body rust
Greetings all:
Three questions (being a rookie, I'm still full of questions... can't
contribute to the answers yet!):
Car: 86 5KS
1. Watched some old car show on TNN(?) Sunday night. They had a brief
special about detailing, and the announcer mentioned using saddle soap on
black plastic trim. He claimed this made it nice and new looking.
Experience out there?
2. Any experience/cost info regarding replacing rubber seals on this car?
There is some wind noise off the A-pillar that I don't believe used to be
there; i.e. I don't think it is the mirror. The trim is starting to become
cracked as well.
3. The car has some rust behind the front wheels. The bottom of the body
(where the rust has formed) is painted with this black rubber-like paint
which has worn off. I'd like to take care of this over Xmas break, before
the rust gets out of control. Griot's Garage sells some black spray-on
rubber paint (sorry- I don't have the catalog, otherwise I could give a
better description). Can I just sand out _all_ the rust, and paint with
this "magic in a can"? Should I prime first? Prime and paint? Is there a
better substance, i.e. the OEM Audi black rubber? (It has lasted 12 years,
so the quality appears great!)
TIA,
-Mike.
P.S. Thanks to all who answered my inquiry and continued the discussion
about my timing belt failure. The belt has been replaced (no, the idler
pulley and water pump were not), and the car again drives like a dream.
P.P.S. I hope my list etiquette is acceptable: asking multiple questions
in one posting; please let me know if not.
