Funny, this was covered again by Orin just a couple of days ago. Take a
up behind the flap, and you'll see the plastic bracket that the spring
attaches to. The spring attaches to a rod in the plastic bracket,
running between the two main parts of the plastic part. It should be
pretty straightforward.

Check that the vacuum hose is securely attached to the vacuum piston,
and that the vacuum piston itself is still attached to the plastic
bracket. The bracket frequently breaks, so that the piston can't ever
open the recirc door. If this is the case, you'll need the official Audi
fix, a fat steel bracket that goes on top of the plastic one. I've got
the part number if you need it.
