A lot of the fluid that "disappeared" after you started the engine went
into the bomb as it charged up. You can get it back by pumping the brakes
with the engine off - the level in the reservoir will rise. This, BTW, is
why you don't fill the reservoir above the "Max" mark - discharging the bomb
will spew fluid out the top of the reservoir if it is too full.
