Lifter Question for 4k

For those that are not in the NE area winter has finally started to show
it's face.  I have a question about my lifters.  When I first started my
car this morning I could hear them tapping/clicking, but it went away after
a minute or two.  I know part of it is oil weight, but I remember from the
other list I am on that some VW mechs use a little ATF right before they
change the oil to clear the passages a bit.  Can I do this with the 5 cyl
engine?  Is there a better way?
