It can. I've bought a Suzuki Swift once which had a leaking crankshaft
seal. When I took the t/belt cover off, the belt had deteriorated to the
point of being little more than liquorice. Luckily, it still held on-
especially as I'm not sure if it would've survived letting go at 95 mph
which I'd been doing the day before...
