Yep, I do the same thing with a _really_ long thin screwdriver. Just
make sure it does not jam on you coz the piston travels at an angle to
the true vertical.

Yes. The timing belt is descrete with a step of 1 tooth so to make a one
tooth error one has to be off by 8° - this is very easy to spot.
