I live in quite a rural area with _lots_ of critters.  I have gotten
into the habit of lifting my hood after I get home more to cool the
engine than anything else.  I have had no critter problems.  My wife
however is a bit less retentive/attentive and as a result i have had
to twice replace the vacuum hoses in her car ('88 Jeep Cherokee). 
I know this might not work for all of you depending on where you live,
neighborhood, etc. but it seems to work for me.  Ohe yeah, did I mention
you motor will cool more quickly:)
