Since I'd forgotten the count, I just went to the shop and checked an old
style cam gear. 44 teeth, which equates to just over 4 degrees per tooth. So
the half tooth differences between the different gears would be equal to about
four degrees of timing (relative). So if someone wanted to so some "fine
tuning" (speaking only relatively, of course -- these are AUDIs), having the
two different gears would allow more finesse in advancing the cam timing. +/-
4 degrees is a bit closer than +/- a bit over 8 degrees.
