Hi Dennis,

Yes there is a center wire, but its extremely tiny-a single 32 ga or
smaller.  Forget about fixing it though.  Best bet is to replace the whole
thing from a junker.  Just need to remove the driver's seat and rear seat
back.  Best if you can find a "u-pull-it" type junkyard.  Cable can be had
for < $5 and any Audi will do.  You just need one that looks in good shape,
i.e., never had the head end spliced or cut.
