Washing the Audi

Ok, Ok,
So I admit it. The newest/best looking car I've had in the past was an
'87 4000 Quattro. Before that is was some older Honda's and Toyota's. For
these cars it was a wax (maybe) once a year and a wash at the local high
school charity car wash every three or four months.
I am now the VERY happy owner of a '95 90 Quattro with an immaculate
paint job. We are really getting into the crappy season here in Washington
and I want to put a good coat of wax on the car before the Christmas travel
season begins for me.
There were quite a few posts on the list in the past month about
automatic car washes and 'the right way' to wash a car. I'd like to know
what the q-listers consider to be the 'right way' to wash and wax a car.
Any techniques or product recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

-Jeremy

PS: I'm still searching for a plastic bug/rock guard for the hood....Any
ideas?
