For another source of power through the cigarette lighter, perhaps you
could buy one of those cigarette-lighter "jump starters." I doubt they
really have enough storage to act as a good jump start battery, but it
would be perfect for this purpose, and wouldn't require an AC power
source or any wiring. 

But, of course, DeWitt's method is cheaper and does restrict the current
flow--which is important. Maybe one of the cigarette-lighter flashlights
would have more of an inherent current-limiting nature? Just a thought.
