CIS mixture adjustment keeps getting lost. Why?

Had Audrey in at mechanic to try and source a hard start problem. He
notices that the mixture is *way* rich, and corrects it. Two weeks later,
it's rich as *h#ll* again, it stinks of gas on start-up and I can watch the
gas gauge go down, I must be getting 10 mpg. 
Why would I lose the adjustment like that? I haven't touched a thing,
honest! 
BTW, it starts ok, now, except for the richness. I put a 12v panel lamp in
the cold-start valve circuit to monitor it's function. Seems to be working
everytime now!
