A4 Trip Computer

I have a 1998 A4. Yesterday the trip computer stopped working.  When I
start the car it still goes through the checks for the systems but the
center screen that shows radio Station, Outside Temp, Avg MPG, and
gear is dark when driving.  Any suggestions on what could be wrong. 
Is this a common problem on the A4.  I know it is a warranty item but
I have an hour drive to the dealer and my work schedule is going to be
tight for the next month.
