mine is relatively new, but could still be partly blocked I suppose

I think it's 87, but a higher temp, if it didn't hurt the engine, would
certainly increase the heater output

easy to check, mine opens all the way.  But does the cable open it all
the way once installed?  I think I've checked.

all my hoses are new (ish)

I doubt that, for instance my oil can get over 100 C anytime I want to
stay on low gears.

My thoughts are, 1 check the valve again, in place, 2 try to check the
core for flow, 3 up the thermostat if I am convinced (btdt's) it won't
thrash my engine.  Maybe biannual stat changes are in order....
