I don't know if you were around when I told the story of the Passat I
bought off John Robinson, the Treasurer of the UK Club.
I did some routine tests and found the vacuum controls leaking.
Things like the distributor advance, upshift indicator, etc.
So I ran it down to the distributor vacuum unit, and replaced it. I
then got the upshift indication, of course. So I challenged John,
who had owned the car for eight years and 100k miles: "When did the
upshift indicator stop working?"
"What upshift indicator?"
Turns out he'd driven the car for 8 years with a dead vacuum advance unit.
