Radio Replacement 10 Spkr 5kt

Alex,

I installed a Radio/CD player in my '84 Olympic yesterday. The task was much
easier than I expected and took about 2-1/2 hours. While I have not driven the
car for any extent, it works very well and all the speakers are responding
normally. I wanted to switch the location of the radio and climate control
and some of the 2-1/2 hours was spent determining that a switch is not
possible.

I used a Blaupunkt "Manhattan". 30 watts per channel - the original radio was
only 6 watts per channel so it should perform very well. It was about $170 at
Best Buy. I think a good basic system.

I agree the amplifier in the trunk is for only the package shelf speakers.
The original radio I removed - a Blaupunkt "Rothenberg" is the same as used in
the four speaker cars so any additional provisions for powering 10 speakers
must be built into the car.

None of the plugs matched so I did have to do a cut and splice on the wiring.
Everything is adequately marked so I had no problems with that. I have good
soldering equipment and did solder joints with shrink tube insulation at all
connections. The Blaupunkt has a battery power connection and an ignition
(switched) power connection. I tied these together so the radio would be
independent of the ignition switch as with the original. As a result, the
clock display is on all the time. I doubt that will cause problems.

There is a wiring adapter available for 10 speaker Audis. The one I bought
and returned was of no value. Your car may be different.

Removing/installing the radio is no big deal. You know about the pins to
release the radio side locks, and you must remove the panel on the right side
of the console to release the nut on the back of the radio.

My amplified crossover seems to be working as before. I don't know about the
isolator you refer to. I don't think you need to do anything except replace
the head. It is not a bad job so have at it and let me know if I can help.

Sincerely, Eric
