Stereo Upgrades

Hi all,

In keeping with my practice of incrementally upgrading my stereo when I'm not spending all my money fixing my car ('84 5ks), I recently replaced the stock rear speakers with 6.5" coaxials (nothing fancy, just cheap Alpines), only to discover that, like the holes at the front, the holes in the rear metal deck (beneath the astroturf) are an odd size. How typical for Audi. Anyway, I'd like to hear from anyone who has upgraded the speakers in their early type 44. What type of speaker did you use and how did you get the speaker to fit properly? I could just use some plywood or MDF and make mounting plates, but I might have a problem with the factory grills clearing the tweeter if I go that route.

I also plan on putting a sub in sometime soon and wanted to know what others have done. I could build a box and have the woofer firing through the ski sack hole (ski sack removed of course), but this would entail a fair amount of work, not to mention extra weight and lost cargo space. A tube holds some appeal because of the ease of installation (especially at -30C) but I'm not sure about the advisability of going that route in a sedan. Suggestions?

TIA,

Jeff Mruss
