5ktq thermostat questions

>I noticed the temp gauge, which never goes much above cold, climbing
rapidly into the hot zone. The temp warning light started flashing and
I pulled over and immediately shut her down.

Good for you, as every pilot knows, always trust your instruments until
proven otherwise.

>Upon opening the hood I found my engine covered in coolant and the
upper radiator hose disconnected.

Coulda been worse, at least your home!
You may want to use a radiator flush to clean out the system while it is
open. VIP or the like should have your thermostat, ~ $15 (prolly bigger
than any other car tstat you've used) and prolly your hose. It is a
very straight forward repair, you might want to check outher hoses for
stress, I bet your top overflow tank to radiator hose is crap (if
original).
