Looking for beginner (read: cheap) rally car.

I'm looking to get into rallying (NW SCCA region), and would like some
advice on a car in the 2000-4000 range.  The car I'm looking at currently is
an 88 Mazda 323 GTX (AWD 1.6 liter turbo, 132hp) but I'd rather have an Audi
if there's anything in the forementioned price-range with decent performance
(and tunability).
