Re: WSJ: SUVs in Chicago

I think the biggest error people does, are spinning the wheels when
they get stuck. The wheels are spinning because they have no grip, and
spinning even more polishes the snow under the tires and makes it into
ice.. When I go up an icy/snowy hill, I often back up if I don't get
up the "right" way. A FWD car will have better grip this way, and if
you are comfortable backing reasonably fast, it will usually work.
Especially with nose-heavy FWD Audis.. :-)

When it's to much snow to drive a car, I use my uncle's John Deere
agricultural tractor with 280 hp engine and 4WD.. It runs happy over
50" of snow, never gets stuck, and has got the power and grip to help
other people in cars out of the snow.. :-) In addition, it has got a
snow plow in front, so if I want to, I can remove the snow before I
drive into it. One bad thing: a top speed of about 31 mph.. :-)
