Hi Daniel,
The center bearing was replaced on my 4k without replacing the driveshaft. 
I don't know for sure what they did.  It was done by the dealer I bought
the car from.  During a test drive well this whining grinding noise just
showed up.
Sorry I don't have more info, can't say about the alignment tool.  Good

Is it possible to replace the driveshaft center bearing alone, or does
the entire driveshaft need to be replaced?  Also, is it possible to do
this job successfully without the alignment tool 3139 shown in the
Bentley?
