4kq shifting difficulties

Greetings -- 

My '85 4000q doesn't like to shift smoothly.
The symptoms are at their worst when the car is sitting still, going into
first, but second and third are no picnic either.  Reverse is the worst of
them all.
The whole linkage feels sloppy (ie - when the car is in reverse, I can move
the shifter to the left about an inch, and the car will still be in reverse).
The last time this kind of thing happened to me, it was in a VW - I had the
linkage bushings replaced, and it was fixed.  
Could this be the same problem?   (and is there a kit for fixing it?)
Should I replace the tranny mounts?

Any other thoughts?  Just trying to get an idea of what I should be looking
for before I get it on  the lift and start turning wrenches.
