I wrote, among other things:

  You could run them hotter with higher voltage and shorter
life, but a higher output bulb at standard voltage would have a different
filament size, and likely degrade the pattern.  It might also slag the
plastic reflector.

Now that I've had enough tea (what am I saying, there is never enough tea),
I realize that my recollection of the reflector is that it is metal, with a
polished reflector coating on the inside that can peel off.
