RE: new engine
Mark,
I haven't really thought thru all the particulars yet, but have included
some answers below. Maybe, we should solicit advice from the list - I know
there are several people who have already done this conversion - Pat Martin,
anyone else? Also, here is the reply I sent to Craig Lebakken regarding the
conversion:
I just purchased the 84 4kcsq here locally (Denver area), although the car
spent most of its life in Pennsylvania and has the corrosion to prove it.
The body is fine (only a couple rust bubbles) and the paint good, but
disassembly of undercarriage parts is always interesting! The alignment shop
broke a rear tie rod when attempting to loosen the sleeve.Even the fuel
filter fittings had to cut off and replaced.
Anyway, the car actually had an ABT suspension kit (lowering springs and
Bilsteins) and a Scorpion cat-back exhaust on it when I bought it (for only
$1500). Since then, we've replaced the following:
front control arms, ball joints, and bushings (urethane)
rear bushings (urethane)
front and rear tie rods (except right front, which needs to be modified)
front brakes - G60's with Powerdisks and carbon metallic pads
rear brakes - OEM
stainless steel brake lines
brake and clutch master/slave cylinders
15" Centra wheels with Dunlop D60 205/50-15 (so I can get thru the winter)
I'm very pleased with the suspension and brakes. The stopping power in
particular is pretty incredible. The whole package is kind of boring, as
with only 115hp (or probably 90hp at this altitude), it's usually full
throttle through the corners.

Gary -- please keep me informed. As soon as weather permits, I think my
father's 4kq is going under the conversion knife.
Have you researched the conversion much?

How do you plan on doing the air box?

Oil cooler location?

compressor/condensor have been removed permanently.

Leaving the vacuum-assist for only off-throttle use?

Using the FI from the 5k?

Where do you plan on getting clutch/flywheel, etc? (or did it come from
Dads?)

You don't have to answer any of these -- they are just my current
concerns.
>>>>>>>>>>>>Let's keep up the dialogue and hopefully get some advice from
other listers who've already done this conversion.
Thanks,
Mark
