Replaced rear wheel bearing, '87 5KTQ

Hey, it wasn't as bad as I expected. All the bolts and nuts came loose -- BIG
surprise there. Took longer than I thought it would, but not because of the
job itself. I was doing the work at the Vocational School here because there
is a big hydraulic press available, and I figured I'd press the bearing
myself. After I got the bearing carrier off the car I set up the press. After
I applied some pressure to get the hub out of the iner bearing the press
sprung several hydraulic leaks.... So I had to take it to a shop. Took 45
minutes to find someone who had shop time available. Had to wait 45 minutes
for someone to get back from lunch to do the work, then 40 minutes while he
got the swap done. Under $15.00 for the labor.
I did find out that the bearing carrier didn't want to go back in place with
the strut assembly in place, so had to remove it. That was a typical PITA to
get back in....
Got everything back in place and tightened all the bolts down, lots of
attention was paid to getting the 32mm nut back on the drive shaft. Although I
reused the old one I did use a hammer to "tighten" it slightly. (I think it
was Phil Payne who mentioned that to the q-list.)
Anyway, it was six hours total -- including the wait at the shop. Not bad for
the first time I'd done it. If the other one goes down it won't take near as
long. I think the first time I changed the front strut cartridges it took
three hours. Now we have both done in 30-40 minutes! Practice is amazing,
isn't it?

	Later.
