Smokey Yunick story- No Q Content
On another list there was a long discussion about the "miracle"
engines Smokey Yunick publicized in the '70's.... the conclusion
being that Smokey was quite accomplished at fiction. This
brought a story from a CA lister:
Smokey Yunick told this story a few years ago at the PRI show
Breakfast in Sacramento:
Ralph Moody and I were in Charlotte for a race in about 1958. We needed
a part
for our car and since the factory didn't support us much, we went to a
local
junk yard to pick one off a junker. We asked the owner about the part
and he
told us that the cars we needed were way in the back end of the yard. As
Ralph
and I walked back through the yard, we noticed a deep sinkhole right in
the
middle of the yard. Being the curious type, I picked up an old junk carb
and
tossed it in. Well, we couldn't hear it hit bottom, so we tossed in an
old
cylinder head. Didn't hear that one hit either. Finally we grabbed an
old
transmission case that was laying there and slid it over to the hole and
shoved it in. Still no sound. But just a few seconds later the damndest
thing
happened. this goat came running by us and jumped into the hole. I
looked at
Ralph and told him "Let's go back and get our parts." A minute later as
we
were working on the car, the owner of the junkyard came by and asked us
if we
had seen his goat. Ralph looked at me, then told the owner that we had
seen
the goat jump into the sinkhole. The owner said that was impossible. I
said,
"No, we saw it." The owner said the goat couldn't have, because he had
tied
him up to an old transmission case.
