The car is an 88 80q, sorry I didn't mention it.

I have a new air filter (2000 miles) and I checked the air intake. The air
intake on this car, as far as I can see, only goes to a "funnel" behind the
right side headlight. I will check it again over the weekend.
---------------------------------------
On the 80/90q 10V I5, the input to the air box contains a thermal valve
which determines how much (cold) air comes from behind the headlight, and
how much (hot) air comes from a sheet metal shroud (that should be) covering
the exhaust manifold. The engine is designed for a particular air
temperature for maximum efficiency. This can be violated by killing off the
heated path, so long as one doesn't care about efficiency or quick warm-up.
The only risk that I can see is that if the temperature and humidity are
just right, icing in the intake can occur, jamming the metering head and
possibly obstructing the injectors. This is more likely in New England than
in Arizona. An Audi mechanic I know related to me that he has occasionally
had to undo air intake "improvements" on his customers' cars when they fail
to keep running under cold humid conditions.
