paris-dakar lltis, the ur-quattro a0?
walton's book (which i read a few weeks ago) tells of the lltis having the
i5 (turbo?) motor for the paris dakar raid.
it was entered mostly to test the rally quattro components. this was
*after* the famous "proof of concept" demonstration of the lltis, and the
pre-production 80-coupe concept cars. it was also around the same time as
the geneva show launch afaik.
whatever, it was well after the ur-quattro had had the go-ahead for
production.
the normal lltis had a 4 cylinder (1.8?) motor and was never turbocharged.

The Paris-Dakar car may have been 5 cylinder, I don't know for sure;
but the normal production Iltis had the 4-cylinder engine (the same
basic one used in many other VWs and Audis), and I don't think it
was
turbocharged.

Audi engineers built a proof-of-concept test mule using a modified
Audi 80
(for U.S. readers, this was the Audi Fox in the late 70s) chassis
and put
some modified hacked up componentry (Iltis and other Audi parts bin
stuff,
as well as some one-offs pieces). This was used to demonstrate the
effectiveness of the concept to VW/Audi senior management. The car
had
160hp yet it outperformed a 240hp Porsche 928 on a test course, and
got
the engineers the approval to proceed with the quattro project.
That car
would arguably be the first "ur" quattro :).
