If your mechanic could be trusted to empty your bank account and properly
rewire the car, he should be able to make it right with less drastic means.  

I've found mine fairly reliable lately after "relaying" around the
headlights and radiator fan (AC speed), and replacing the fuse box.  I did
subsequently have one wire fail at the fusebox connector, but nothing's
perfect.  I also wired around the window switch connector, which was high
resistance (especially on grounds).  If that doesn't stabilize your
windows, they may be candidates for rewiring inside the doors.

I suspect if you did spend a fortune rewiring it, you would spend quite a
long time debugging the job.
