Re: Space saver spare tires are a joke
John and everybody
,
I bought both my Audis from the original owners. (A 1987 5000tq sedan and a
1991 200q avant). Neither car had a proper spare wheel/tire. The way I see
it, the point of a spare tire is a safety / convenience factor...I suppose
one could argue that you don't even need a spare of any kind, (Heck , just
drive it like the rally guys do when they have a flat...) !!!!!
Ever been on a LONG trip and had a flat ??! In the middle of Timbuktu where
the only available tire is an off brand piece of garbage (not even S rated)
at $150 + ??! If the shop's even open ??! And you really do have to be
somewhere at a given time ? Oh, and now you're going to limp along on the
shoulder getting side swiped by all the rude crazies who never move over for
anything...and you only have 683.7 miles to go. Have a nice trip in your now
obsolete nice car.!!!
Sure, this scenario doesn't happen that frequently (thank god), but it does
occur.
I see the ultimate use of a vehicle is first to get you there. Then to have
as much fun / comfort / convenience while doing it as possible.
Hell, why do we like a good awd system on Audis ? Because every once in
awhile the weather is really bad , the chosen roads are really bad, and
maybe we like getting there in a nice car with no sweat...I guess awd isn't
"necessary" either ? There are quite a few excellent 2wd performers out
there that work very well on the smooth dry stuff. I'm sure we've all
driven some real 2 wd bombs in terrible conditions and gotten where we
needed...
My point was, it seems absurd that a nice, large, dependable vehicle which
can go thru most conditions should be handicapped by not having a real
spare. After all, you're only as good as your weakest link.
BTW, ever had a flat on a motorcylce? Now there's a good time ! (If of
course you didn't crash first).
Just my BS, Joel Stetina 87 5000 tq, 91 200q, 79 323i, & motorcylces.
