Exhaust cracks - 86 4KS

Brought car to Meineke 'cause exhaust became noisy & I could feel leaking with
my hand. Really wanted to get it on a lift to see better for myself. Nice man
quoted $350 for resonator and muffler sections. Each had small crack where
pipe meets appliance. The exhaust looks pretty new to me. Meineke man says
this is symptomatic of a car that was laid up for a while.

Anyhow, any problems to be concerned with other than fumes & noise, i.e.,
impact on engine performance?

How are those exhaust repair pastes, putties & tapes? Want to do this myself
without any major expenditure. Putting to much into this money pit lately.
