Wheel rate v. spring rate (was 17" wheels on an Ur-Q)...
Yesterday, while dashing off a quick reply about my experiences in fitting
8x17 wheels to my Ur-Q, I suggested that the resulting reduction in track
width caused by using a wheel with a 33mm offset as compared to the OEM offset
of 25mm would increase spring rates, among other things...
Well, for the pedantic among you, I was wrong. Actually, it doesn't change
the spring rate at all but it does increase the *wheel* rate, which is the
spring rate x motion ratio of the suspension. Obviously, I know the
difference and am guilty of using a shorthand reference that I thought would
make my point clearly, not of misunderstanding the very concept I was trying
to relate ... in future, I'll try to be more careful.
(Sheesh ... what a tough crowd.)
