You may well be $crewed if you buy this car. I've been looking for a V8
front end for a while now. They don't exist in economical qty's. I've
called all the major yards in the west coast. Most yards want +$3,000 for
the parts you seek. The only yard that had one wanted $5,000. I don't know
what you are paying for the car, but lets do some math as I just (last week)
went through this on a V8 hit in the rear that I didn't buy.
Purchase price $3,000
Steering Rack (probably) 600
Rear Main (possibly) 400
Tranny (Depends on how it was hit) 3,000
Front End (Gift Price) 2,000
Paint and Body 1,500
etc 400
----------
Your cheap V8(with salvage title) $10,900
Lets say the tranny is fine. You still got an $8,000 V8 with a salvage
title (I assume). This is going to offend V8 owners, but the price of the
V8 is falling (5 speeds excepted of course). I predicted that the price
would go the way of the 1988 - 1991 7 series BMW's 6 months ago, and they
are. You can find a well maintained V8 in the $8,000 - $10,000 range with
no hassle of running around and repairing, probably on this list.
Don't get me wrong. I _love_ the V8. I will eventually buy one. But
buying a hit V8 is not the way to go. Do the numbers.
All that being said, maybe the above is not true in the East. If cars and
parts are more plentiful, the deal may be possible. Again, do the
numbers...
