Re: 91 Coupe Q "roof rack"

First,

Then Eric R. wrote:
All the kits will have the same bar span for the CQ because
you are limited by the mounting holes. I don't know the exact
distance, but it's far more than 18". Kyacks should be fine, and

To which I add:

Obviously the "span" of the roof rack bars is greater than 18", they "span"
all the way across the car, and you can get them as long as you like. Where
the confusion is coming from , I suspect, is the Thule application guide
used by dealers. When I ordered mine, they said that the bars could only be
mounted 18" apart because that's where Audi put the roof indents for the
mounting claws. Therefore, they recommend only light loads on the roof, and
no long loads at all. As Eric points out, this is just plain wrong. The
bars mount considerably further apart than 18" and as others have pointed
out, they take quite a load.

Eric, maybe a note on the roof rack page giving a head's up about rack
dealer misinformation?

I'd second Eric's suggestion to peruse the 20v pages; I'll bet they're among
the most comprehensive of any model car anywhere.
