But the engine may well survive - such is modern engineering.  All the
time, though, deposits are narrowing the breathers and oilways.

I strongly suspect my Passat was a victim of this treatment.  It took
me more than a weekend to clean the engine out, but at no time prior
to the stoppage that caused the stripdown had it shown any signs of
distress.  One day it was working normally, the next it just gummed up.
