On my recently-purchased 88 5KQ, the backup lights were not working.  Checking the backup switch I have discovered that it was disconnected.  Well, I have connected it again.  Big mistake, Fuse #12 blew immediately and diasbled all the major diagnostic systems.  Being puzzled by the situation, I have turned to quattro archives.  The archives included a suggestion that either the wire on top of the transmission chaffed through or the trunk lid cable got frayed.  Inspection of the trunk cables proced the latter to be true.
