Subject: Annoying noise

A spontaneous buzzing sound popped up this weekend. It is coming from the
middle of the dash and seems to be just below the small vent which reads the
inside temperature. (Plugging the vent with tape drops the sound
considerably). The sound is there whenever the car is turned on and is
unaffected by speed. If anyone has an idea what this may be, and if so, how
to fix, I would greatly appreciate the input. Thanks, Greg

Sounds like the aspirator fan thingy for the inside temperature sensor is
failing, or has something stuck in it. I have not btdt, but others have said
it is difficult to access... I think the fan is mounted onto the underside of
the dash. Pull it out and try to fix it (it's only a fan); you could also
take off the power lead to the fan portion and hope that enough air gets in
without the fan to allow some temperature regulation. Should work ok without
the fan, just respond to temperature changes rather slowly. If audi wants
major $$$, just buy a cheap fan motor and fit it to your busted one, or fix
the brushes etc. that have worn out.
