rear output shaft seal leak

My mechanic tells me my 94 1000cs quattro has a power divider after the
transmission and that the rear output shaft is leaking onto the
catalytic converter.  When I shut the engine down after a trip there is
burnt order and we attribute it to the sear leak.  Has anyone else
experienced this problem?  Car has about 56K and I am the second owner.  
Are there any service bulletins on this problem?  Should not Audi be
standing behind this problem?  I have not talked with the dealer yet -- 
I wanted to get as much information as possible before talking with the 
service rep ore zone rep.  Oftentimes there is a silent warranty, but
this may even be covered under the base driveline warranty.
